Is it possible to have a satisfactory VHF activity if you
live in the middle of a Valley enclosed by mountains with more than 30 Degrees elevation?
Of course it is not the same as staying in lowlands or on the top of a 3000Mt mountain!
The task is much more complicated. You must be able to exploit as much as you can the
reflecting possibility of the mountains and above all to content yourself and hope that
your correspondant is patient! After almost 30 years of 144MHz radio activity from my QTH
with hundreds of QSO and attempts through diffraction on several Dolomites Groups, I still
have a lot to learn and experiment. Conditions, expecially via tropo, change in few
instants and you immediately have to move the QTF in order to exploit the new reflection
open on the mountain. Perhaps this is what still keeps me particularly bound to this
frequency!! I am also active in MeteorScatter although limitedly to the directions between
210°-300° and 80°-120° where the height of the mountains is inferior to 5°-10°.
Anyway I have had the possibility of working northern and southern stations via
Backscatter. |
